Firstly I must admit i never thought i’d have so much fun talking to 2 older ladies, as today! Fiona and Mary were so fascinating and had interesting stories to share with us. I really enjoyed it when they talked about the sixties as I would love to have lived in that era, and loved hearing about the beatles concert and all the screaming (just goes to show that nothing changes!!!) I have learnt so much from this experience but to be honest, found Mary's stories emotional and at certain times i felt a little uncomfortable, as such memories can be horrible for a child, and were horrendous to hear, but, without sounding patronising!!!!!, made me feel certain pride in the older generation, as they have managed to come out from something like that with such an amazing outlook in life, and a sense of sadness, as it makes you think what they have been through and can sometime be treated so cruely and suffer consequences that could be avoided.
After they had finished telling their stories, (which, i personally feel i could have listened to all day!!), we had an opportunity to ask a few more questions, before we separated into groups and performed one. There was such a variety which actually made it difficult to make a decision, as there were parts we loved in all of them and some we felt were best to avoid. Our group chose Fiona's story of when she met her husband which was, for lack of another word, clumsy, but very very funny! All of the pieces (oddly enough, were different, and not just on how they were told, but the stories chosen) told Mary's and Fiona's stories well. Both said they enjoyed watching our pieces and thought it was strange seeing their lives performed back to them. When we were performing our piece I was concerned that aFiona would take offence as we were over exaggerating it a little, however, at the end said she really enjoyed it, especially the part where we danced around our hand bangs (a part of the story she forgot to mention!!!! ^_^) .
Again, i just have to say i enjoyed this lecture so so much and would like to thank them both for making it a great experience (and please can we have them back one day!!?).

27th November & 4th December
i have to say i feel i have to apologise mainly to mark as i have actually missed these 2 lectures so am a little behind, but i have good reasoning, my father was in an accident on the 26th nov and was in hospital, and pretty much spent the whole night worrying about how he was (no one was telling me!!!) finally i got to sleep about half 2, (My mum called me, and said he was ok, just badly battered) but i had to go home the next day, but looking at other peoples blogs, i feel i missed out on an interesting lecture!!
the 2nd week, sounds like ur primary school excuse, but i just felt so ill i slept thorugh my alarm and pretty much just wanted to die! i felt absolutely awful!
However, i have not completely wasted any time i have had, i have decided that for my exam piece i would like to do the group project, as id love to work with children with disabilities but am petrified of the idea of doing it as an examined piece, so in the new year when i get my new semester time table, i have decided im going to volunteer, subject to availability of course, and would rather do the group project as part of my examined piece.
I wish the of you luck in your work though and if you do a single project im sure you will do great!

Looking through I have realized I have spoken more about myself and my thoughts more than the course in itself, so far we have looked at various types of theatre and different methods, the most recent was Verbatim theatre, but we have also looked at Forum theatre (linked in with Cardboard Citizens) and Story telling.
Verbatim: This was a totally new concept to, I had never heard of this style personally was compelled as it sounded like an interesting approach due to its intimacy and naturalism, as personally have always preferred true “stories” in all aspects of reading, and watching, and have always been pulled in more by the emotion, as I know that this is actually what someone has been through and experienced.
The facts presented are word for word opinions of people, some which people may find disturbing or offensive, but in the end are facts which need to be “heard”.
In the lecture, we were given examples of Verbatim scripts and the two that stuck in my mind the most were "Black Watch" where the soldiers were based in Iraq and lost 2 of their comrades, and "Cancer tales" which as its title suggest is about cancer sufferers, mainly focused on women though, I think these two stuck in my head the most, because these are two of our most current situations, but also because the majority of us have had to deal with the cancer issue or know someone that has, and personally I know a lot of people who are in the army and have or are fighting in Afghanistan or Iraq as I write this.
Our topic for our own Verbatim Theatre project is Binge Drinking, the main reason is that not only is it an issue in St Mary's College but nationally, and not only amongst students. We were asked to try and base our around St Marys as much as possible, as at the moment we have an issue with the ambulance crew, as they were called out many times during Freshers week due to excessive drinking, one person needing an ambulance twice in one week.
Story telling: basis of this lecture was to look at how we tell stories, different techniques and methods used to bring the story to life.
We paired up to do an exercise where we told each other a memorable night out, good or bad, however with one story we had to ask questions to get as many of the facts as we possibly could, with the other, we just had to let it flow naturally, with both we had to take notes and recount it to eachother.
It was a good exercise, however it did feel weird having someone telling you what had happened to you!
Also, when I was telling the story back to my partner it felt quite strange, as some of the notes did feel rather personal, so made me think about privacy issues.

None of the actors were drama school students, however, managed to portray, only watch can be described as an emotional, touching, educational and eye opening piece of theatre. They told us three stories, about a social worker having a rough time, a philipeano woman taken to England to work as babysitter but was treated badly when she started and a boy in care, who was rather rebellious, though from what I understood only wanted to be loved by his mother.
As an audience we were given the opportunity to look and “re-do” one of the stories as if it were us in that situation and we decided on the womans story. We picked out the bits we thought we felt could have been done differently. So we would go down and be the woman, and do it how we felt we would have handled it, however, the cast would act like a blockade, and make it difficult.
Forum theatre is a good method of showing a group of people how to do things differently, even if they don’t always end up with the desired outcomes, as it’s a true to life experience, that can sow us life is not always as easy, as ifs and buts.

Also in our lectures we have looked at various warm ups to warm up the body and mind, and loosen the muscles, and played “games” that involves the whole group working as a team, verbally and non verbally, and having to stay alert!!!
These include cat and mouse, stanging in a circle shaking our whole body, again in a circle, throwing a ball at eachother, having to think of something on the spot to do with a particular theme, we also had to do a type of hierarchy game, where we weren’t allowed to talk but we had to stand in line, first tallest to shortest, then dark to light hair colour, and finally warmth to coldest of hands. All this had to be done without words.

PROJECT
To be honest I think deep down, I was rather hoping there would be a large group project, mainly because the idea of doing this by myself terrifies me! I have never done this kind of work before and imagining if anything goes badly wrong! its all down to me! But then again, What's life without a challenge?? There's only one way to learn really, and that is being thrown into the deep end i suppose!
I've had a few ideas, but i expect i'm going to wait until we have our lecture to figure out exactly what I am going to do!!!! :$
reading week!
the last lecture was quite an interesting one, the style of script writing sounded rather appealing, and in all honesty, at first thought the set work would be alot easier than it actually is! IT SO ISN'T! and if it all could go wrong! it has!!
I had a tape recorder at home, a little hand held thing, and after HOURS of searching!! found it, recorded an interview with my dad (a bus driver) and started to type, not long into the interview the tape recorder stops working! i change the battery! AND NOTHING! That's what I get for using a recorder that hasn't been used for a while! Maybe thats why??? Well whatever the reason, it now means I'm going to be working round the clock!!!!
It is now sunday, leaving me with 4 days to sort it out! So now am willing my house mate to get home so I can interview him! and get this thing done! here's hoping my laptop doesn't die on me too or decides to stop recording!

Cardboard Citizens! 14/10/08
I know I'm a little late in posting! But being... ME! I've just figured out why I've had nothing on my page for the last month! I've been saving! Not Publishing!
Tonight I had been to see the Cardboard Citizens Production and I have to say, not only did I enjoy it more than I had been expecting, It tought me something which frankly confuses me! Homeless people are homeless because they can't afford anywhere to live, and yet homeless shelters charge over £100 a week to stay in a hostel, designed for homeless people!!? How on earth does this work!?
I'm starting to think I may be more Ignorant than I'd originally anticipated to think that it'd be free, in the hope of eliminating homelessness!!!
However, all in all, it opened my eyes to what people go through, and shows that it is alot harder than it looks in some situations, after all we all say we may do things differently, but in the end, there is always something that will backfire on all our ways of doing things, and however many options we have in life, something can always go wrong for us if we are not careful.
SO, all in all, entertaining night as it was, pretty much, a massive eye opener!

30/09/08 First Lecture
Today was my first lecture and to be honest I didn't know what to expect not having done this kind of course in the second year or outside of university, however, after the first lecture, I am actually looking forward to what is to come ahead and with the possiblity of working with groups to bring drama into their lives.
I always thought Theatre in the community would be alot easier than it actually is! I guess I was being Naive and closed minded by just how much work goes into a drama project of this magnitude!
It does make me wonder though, Am I cut out for this kind of work??? Well, I guess there is only one way to find out!
